A Message from Mary Gurganus

Earlier this month, something quietly powerful passed through Raleigh, the Walk for Peace. Watching that steady, unhurried pace was a reminder that peace is not a slogan, it’s a practice, one step at a time.

February can bring big emotions and big questions to the surface, especially for families navigating separation, divorce, custody, or financial change. I often see how overwhelming it feels when everything seems urgent at once. But I also see what happens when someone slows down just enough to get grounded, gather the right information, and take the next step with intention.

A long walk is completed through consistency, patience, and support. If you are facing a major change right now, I hope you will give yourself permission to move at a pace that is steady and sustainable. Step by step is still forward.

This month, we’re honoring Ruth Whitehead Whaley, a remarkable attorney born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, whose work helped open doors for generations to come.

In 1925, she passed the New York bar and became one of the earliest Black women to practice law in New York. In 1933, she became the first Black woman licensed to practice law in North Carolina, achieving that milestone during a time when barriers were built to keep talented people out.

Her legacy lives on at Fordham Law, where top students are recognized as Ruth Whitehead Whaley Scholars, and through the Ruth Whitehead Whaley Trailblazing Alumnus Award presented by the Black Law Students Association.

Her story is a reminder that progress is often made by people who refuse to quit, even when the path is steep.

One Networking Tip Most People Miss

Most people walk into networking events focused on meeting as many people as possible. The real driver of referrals is simpler, being remembered, not being impressive.

Try swapping “What do you do?” for two questions that make referrals easier:

Who’s a great referral for you?

What’s a common problem your clients have right before they call you?

Those answers tell you exactly who to listen for in everyday conversations, so you can make introductions that feel natural and confident.
