 A Message from Mary Gurganus

August often brings a shift in routine for North Carolina families.

Children may be heading back to school, parenting schedules may need to adjust, and families may be reviewing transportation, extracurricular activities, expenses, and communication between households.

For others, this season may bring different questions, such as how to prepare for separation, what happens to property or debt, whether alimony may be an issue, or when to speak with a family law attorney.

In this month’s Compass, we are sharing practical resources to help you know what to review, what questions to ask, and where to find support.

Whether you are navigating custody, divorce, support, property division, or simply trying to understand your next step, we hope this edition helps you feel more informed and prepared.

What Families Are Asking This Month

This time of year, many families ask questions such as:

What should we review before the school year starts?

Can one parent change the school-year custody schedule?

Who pays for school supplies, childcare, or extracurricular activities?

What happens if parents disagree about school decisions?

Is it too early to speak with a family law attorney?

What financial documents should I gather before separation or divorce?

How do child support or alimony questions get reviewed?

These questions are common, and they often come up before someone knows whether they need legal guidance. Learning what to review now may help reduce confusion later.

Back-to-School Custody Questions

The start of the school year can bring new routines, new expenses, and new communication needs.

Co-parents may want to review:

School-year parenting time

Transportation and exchange locations

School communication access

Homework and activity expectations

Childcare, school supplies, and extracurricular costs

Holiday, teacher workday, and early-release schedules

How schedule changes should be requested

If your North Carolina custody order or parenting agreement is unclear, difficult to follow, or no longer fits your child’s needs, it may be helpful to ask questions before the school year becomes more stressful.

Local Events, Activities, and New Ways to Connect

Family transitions can affect more than legal decisions. They can also change routines, social circles, hobbies, and how people spend their time.

If you are looking for something new this month, consider exploring local events, classes, volunteer opportunities, fitness groups, or community activities around the Triangle. Whether you are rebuilding your routine, trying a new hobby, or simply looking for a healthy way to get out of the house, local events can be a helpful place to start.

Places to explore:

Visit Raleigh Events Calendar

Meetup Raleigh

Downtown Clayton Community Events

Trying something new does not have to be a major step. Sometimes one class, walk, event, or conversation can help create a sense of connection during a season of change.
