A Message from Mary Gurganus

Earlier this month, something quietly powerful passed through Raleigh, the Walk for Peace. Watching that steady, unhurried pace was a reminder that peace is not a slogan, it’s a practice, one step at a time.

February can bring big emotions and big questions to the surface, especially for families navigating separation, divorce, custody, or financial change. I often see how overwhelming it feels when everything seems urgent at once. But I also see what happens when someone slows down just enough to get grounded, gather the right information, and take the next step with intention.

A long walk is completed through consistency, patience, and support. If you are facing a major change right now, I hope you will give yourself permission to move at a pace that is steady and sustainable. Step by step is still forward.

This month, we’re honoring Ruth Whitehead Whaley, a remarkable attorney born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, whose work helped open doors for generations to come.

In 1925, she passed the New York bar and became one of the earliest Black women to practice law in New York. In 1933, she became the first Black woman licensed to practice law in North Carolina, a milestone achieved during a time when barriers were built to keep talented people out.

Her impact is still recognized today through the honors that carry her name. At Fordham Law, students in the top 25 percent of each class are honored as Ruth Whitehead Whaley Scholars. The Black Law Students Association also bestows an annual Ruth Whitehead Whaley Trailblazing Alumnus Award, recognizing alumni who embody her bold spirit and commitment to excellence.

Her story is a reminder that progress is often made by people who refuse to quit, even when the path is steep.

Awareness Spotlight: Teen Dating Violence Awareness

This February, we wanted to gently bring attention to Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Dating abuse can show up early, and it often starts as control, not physical harm. For parents navigating separation, divorce, or child custody changes, routines and support systems can shift, so consistent check-ins and open conversation matters.

love is respect is a free, confidential resource for teens and young adults (and the people who care about them) with questions about healthy relationships and dating abuse. It’s a project of the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and support is available 24/7 by phone, text, and live chat.
